Agility and Transport Intelligence groups have released their Emerging Markets Logistics Index 2023 report, which ranks the top 50 emerging countries in the world based on the development of their logistics sector. Fourteen African countries have moved up in the rankings, with Morocco leading the continent.
Agility Group, a prominent supply chain services provider, and Transport Intelligence have recently released the 14th edition of the Agility Emerging Markets Logistics Index 2023, which evaluates the logistics competitiveness of emerging countries worldwide.
The Agility emerging markets logistics index 2023, now in its 14th edition, is a yearly ranking that evaluates the logistics competitiveness of emerging nations based on four main criteria and their corresponding sub-criteria. These criteria include internal logistics assets (such as the logistics market size and growth, GDP, population, urbanization, etc.), external logistics assets (such as the quality of infrastructure and connectivity, logistics-intensive trade, and cost and time of border procedures), business climate (including environmental regulations, market accessibility, cost of crime and violence, etc.), and digital readiness (such as digital competence and human capital, e-commerce, energy mix, etc.).
The Agility emerging markets logistics index 2023 ranking is determined by the average scores achieved across the four fundamental criteria selected.
The Agility emerging markets logistics index 2023 provides a comprehensive view of the logistics sector’s growth strategies in emerging countries, with a particular focus on Africa. The index highlights countries’ efforts towards sustainable development, the resilience of their supply chains, and their adoption of digital tools. Additionally, the ranking assesses the availability of efficient logistics infrastructure that enables countries to better integrate into global trade and supply chains.
Out of the 50 emerging countries evaluated, China, the world’s second-largest economy, ranks first with an overall score of 8.31, followed by India (7.43), the United Arab Emirates (6.59), Malaysia (6.16), and Indonesia (6.08).
According to a survey of 750 global supply chain industry professionals by Agility and Transport Intelligence, several African countries have improved their rankings due to the global economic slowdown and the accelerated adoption of digital technologies brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Morocco remains the leading country in Africa and maintains its 20th place globally with a score of 5.08, up from 4.65 the previous year, according to the survey of 750 global supply chain industry professionals conducted by Agility and Transport Intelligence. The kingdom strengthened its position in the “Business Fundamentals” category due to its open, robust, and fair business climate, which includes regulatory environment, contract enforcement, internal stability, inflation levels, and market accessibility. Morocco scored 6.45/10 in this category, surpassing other African countries. In terms of the international logistics criterion, Morocco scored 5.09, mainly due to its port infrastructure, particularly Tanger Med.
However, Morocco is closely followed by Egypt, which ranks second in Africa with an overall score of 5.06, thanks in particular to its business climate with a score of 5.62 and the performance of its internal logistics with a score of 5.15.
It is worth noting that Kenya, ranked 25th in the index and 4th in Africa with an overall score of 4.86, exhibits the strongest performance in terms of the degree of digital readiness criterion with a score of 5.56, indicating the country’s advancement in digital trade services in Africa.
